concept is to allow the river to adjust and find a morphological balance, protection of private
agricultural land and irrigation diversions are essential in order to keep bulldozers out of the
stream and continue the natural enhancement of the floodplain.
Phase II identifies problem sites that need further protection to maintain the objectives of Phase
L Funds from the Colorado Watershed Protection Fund were used to construct eight rock veins at
two sites; these rock veins stabilize the bai~lcs and encourage natural regeneration of native
riparian species. Once the bai~lcs are stabilized there is no need for heavy equipment in the river.
Several additional sites which are in need of stabilization have been identified in the river section
that was included in the original Midway Project.
Cross sections established during that project indicate a recent increase in bank erosion as the
temporary measures begin to fail. The design and preliminary engineering for Phase 2 are
already complete. The programmatic goal of this project is to complete a segment of the second
and final phase of this stream restoration project. Public attitudes and awareness have increased
exponentially since the Association began stream restoration projects in 1998 and this project
will improve that substantially.
Goals, Objectives, Tasks and Costs.
Goal 1: Reduce Sediment, Selenium and Nutrients into the River
Objective 1: Develop a coordinated constn~ction plan
Task l: Field engineering and surveying
Cost: $ 1,800
Task 2: Transport equipment, locate material sources and transport to the site
Products: 170 tons of rock ready to install
Cost: $ 14,300
Objective 2: Implement BMP's
Task 3: hlstall rock structures
Products: Bank protection and erosion control for 660 feet of the river
Cost: $10,750
Goal 2: Quantify measurable results
Objective 3: Moiutor existing cross sections
Task 4: Survey cross sections, plot and analyze data
Products: Demonstrate 75% reduction in bank erosion
Cost: $500
Task 5: Establish photo points and determine success of vegetation
Products: Demonstrate success rate with willow plantings, write report
Cost: $500
We were able to secure additional cash match in the amount of $3,750 from riverfront
landowners that was not included in the original project budget. These funds were used to install
bai~lc stabilization stn~ctures. The total project cost, including cash match, in-kind donations, and
