There were a number of instances where visual evidence indicated that phreatophyte
vegetation existed outside the alluvial extent shapefile provided by LRE that defines the
boundary of the study area for phreatophyte ET estimation (blue portions of Figure 5).
The excluded lands may include both incidental water use by native vegetation in areas
bordering irrigated lands, and phreatophyte ET in areas outside the alluvial boundary
(demonstrated in Figure 6). Fortunately, these areas were relatively limited in extent
compared to the areas captured within the alluvial boundary
Figure 5.
The polygon capturing the phreatophyte
riparian vegetation is shown highlighted
in red. The mapped irrigated lands are
portrayed in green and the line marking
the mapped boundary of the alluvium is
mapped as a blue line. The background is
the USGS DOQQ.
~~
;~ ,
~F ~ i
~ ~~~ .~~^
5~
~ ~ ~L
'.~ A i ...
c" ~, ~ ,yl,'~. _
~~.
d ~ • ' emu"..: ~ i' "' ~". ems` l+r' _
. ~' ~ ~ : ,
.~~ i
--' ,-°
.~~.;~
4..Y~ ry'i
~ ~~
,, °:.~~
Baekground: LandSat T~VI Faxse Color
Phreafiophyte Boundary
Aluvial Extent ~
~~ Irrigated Lands o n5
~~~ame~e«
Figure 6.
The boundary of the mapped alluvium is
indicated by the dark blue line (this is an
enlarged portion of Figure 5) displayed over
the TM7 data. Only that phreatophyte cover
(yellow boundary) inside the alluvial
boundary was considered for estimation of
ET. Hence, the springs visible above this
boundary were not counted in the ET
estimate.
10
