2.0 Aquifer Properties Database
This section documents the HydroBase tables that contain aquifer properties data.
Phase 2 data will be compiled into the HydroBase format as described below.
2.1 Database Structure
Four HydroBase tables contain information pertinent to aquifer property data for the
Denver Basin Region. These are the WELLS, PUMPING_TEST,
REF_ELEV_ACCURACY and REF_LOC_ACCURACY tables.
The WELLS table contains the well name and permit number, well location, and other
information about a well's characteristics. The WELLS table is the core table that links
well information data with geophysical log, water level, and aquifer properties data.
The core of the aquifer properties data is stored in the PUMPING_TEST table. This
includes information such as test date, test type, and test results, including
transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and storage coefficient values.
The REF_ELEV_ ACCURACY table includes comments indicating the source and
accuracy of the elevation value.
The REF_LOC_ACCURACY table includes comments on the siting accuracy of the
location (X,Y) data.
All aquifer property data collected during Phase 2 were combined and placed in the
appropriate tables.
HydroBase does not have a table that is specifically designed to store laboratory data.
This limits HydroBase in its ability to store data collected from multiple depth intervals
in a particular borehole. Additionally, HydroBase currently has no ability to identify a
core sample as having come from a confining unit between aquifers, to record a core
sample's lithologic description, or to identify core samples as having come from an
aquifer other than the one in which the well was completed. The significance of this
issue is exemplified by data collected by Barkmann (2001), who reports confining unit
vertical K values, or by Lapey (2001), who provides K, Sy and porosity data from 55 core
samples collected from the four different major Denver Basin aquifers and their
intervening confining units at the Kiowa borehole.
Appendix B provides a summary of the tables and fields from HydroBase that contain
aquifer properties information.
2.2 Quality Control
A series of quality control steps were undertaken once the Phase 2 data were compiled
into a common electronic format. These steps were performed to check on the accuracy
of the data before submitting it to the State for uploading into HydroBase.
Numerical data from each of the sources external to HydroBase were initially entered
into a Microsoft Excel® spreadsheet. Hand-entered data were then checked for accuracy
SPDSS Phase 2 Task 43.2 TM -Final 15
2/ 13/ 2006
