Appendix A: Instructions to Query Picks from HydroBase for Contouring the Denver Basin
Bedrock Aquifer Surfaces
c. TKDS (Denver Sands) = Picks were filtered in Excel where °Aquifex'' _ 'TKD' and
°Glogthickness" > 0
B. Arapahoe Picks
1. In Access database, Wells and Geophlogs tables were linked up in a query. Selected fields were
chosen from the Wells table (location information) and all fields were chosen from the Geophlogs
table. The table was exported to Excel.
a. KAT =Picks were filtered in Excel where °Aquifex'' _ 'KA' or "Aquifer" _ 'UKA' and
°Glogtop° > 0
b. KALT = Picks were filtered in Excel where "Aquifer" _ 'LKA' and °Glogtop° > 0
c. KAB= Picks were filtered in Excel where "Aquifer" _ 'LKA' or 'KA' and °Glogbase' > 0.
If KALB disagreed with KAB then both picks were excluded. (It is assumed that all picks
stored as KAUB representing the KAB surface are duplicated in KALB)
2. In Access the Geophlogs table was pivoted from a many record per Well ID to a one record per
Well ID table format by using update queries. X, Y values were added to the pivot table from the
Wells table. This allowed all picks for a single log to be evaluated in the same row. The pivoted
table was imported into ArcGIS and converted to a shapefile to filter picks.
a. KAUB:
i. Select KAUB > 0 and located within and up to 3 miles outside of the Divided
Arapahoe boundary (1002 records)
ii. Remove picks where KAUB =KALB (650 records) (These picks would represent
the KAB surface)
iii. Use remaining KAUB picks
b. KAUS:
i. Select KAUS > 0 and located within and up to 3 miles outside of the Divided
Arapahoe boundary (762 records)
ii. Remove where KALB >0 and KAUB >0 and KAUB =KALB (558 records) (These
picks would represent KAS)
iii. Use remaining KAUS picks
c. KALS
i. Select KALS > 0 and located within and up to 3 miles outside of the Divided
Arapahoe boundary (571 records)
ii. Remove where KALB >0 and KAUB >0 and KAUB =KALB (565 records) (These
picks would represent KAS)
iii. Use remaining KALS picks
d. KAS
i. Query 1
1. Where values not null from queries c and d above for same log, sum
KAUS and KALS (453 records)
ii. Query 2
1. KAS > 0 (1402 records) (In many cases the database already summed
KAUS and KALS)
2. Use KAS picks
SPDSS Phase 2 Task 42.2 TM -Final A-2
2/13/06
