SPDSS Phase 4 Task 39 Water Level Measurement
Technical Memorandum
Final
To: Ray Alvarado
From: Camp Dresser and McKee Inc.
Matt Bliss, Andy Horn, Donavon Paschall, Harula Sloan, and Gordon McCurry
Subject: SPDSS Groundwater Component Phase 4 Final Task 39
Water Level Measurement Technical Memorandum
Date: May 20, 2008
Introduction
The groundwater component of t11e South Platte Decision Support System (SPDSS) focuses on
compiling and evaluating available relevant data to support the Decision Support System (DSS)
for the South Platte River watershed and to add fl1e data to HydroBase, the State of Colorado's
hydrological database. The SPDSS groundwater study area is presented in Figure 1. For the
purposes of the SPDSS, the groundwater study area is divided into two hydrologic regions. The
Denver Basin Region includes the bedrock aquifers of the Denver Basin. The South Platte
Alluvium Region consists of t11e unconsolidated deposits of the South Platte River mainstem
and its tributaries, extending downstream from just below Chatfield Reservoir to the Nebraska
state line at Julesburg. The South Platte Alluvium Region also includes the alluvial systems
overly>11g the Denver Basin bedrock aquifers.
This task was undertaken for the Colorado Water Conservation Board (CWCB) and the Division
of Water Resources (DWR), under Task 39 of Phases 2, 3 and 4 of the SPDSS by Camp Dresser &
McKee (CDM). The following subtasks have been completed during the various phases of Task
39:
• collection of autumn water level measurements,
• download of water level data from water level pressure transducers and data loggers
(data loggers) at SPDSS monitoruzg wells,
• selection and instrumentation of four bedrock monitoring wells, and
• surveying of selected monitoring wells.
Phase 4 included the collection of autumn water level measurements and the download of
water level data. The objective of collecting autumn groundwater level data for the bedrock
and alluvial groundwater systems >11 the Denver Basin Region is to supplement data collected
by fl1e DWR >11 the spring of each year. Autumn water level data provides t11e ability to analyze
seasonal water level trends t11at are not possible to evaluate based only on spring
measurements. The evaluation of seasonal effects will also provide insight to the long-term
benefit of autumn water level measurements. In addition to the wells measured in P11ase 2 and
3, additional wells were measured in Phase 4 in the alluvial aquifer of the Poudre River Basin.
SPDSS Phase 4 Task 39 Technical Memorandum-Final
O~i20%2008
