South Platte Decision Support System Groundwater Component Task 33 Field Study Work Plan
for Alluvial and Bedrock Well Installation, Testing, and Water Level Monitoring
adequately characterize the groundwater system at key locations in the SPDSS study
area.
2.1 Task 35, Proposed Denver Basin Region Alluvial Aquifer
Monitoring Well Locations
Figures 2 and 3 show the six areas of interest within the alluvial aquifers that have
been targeted for additional investigation during Phase 2. These areas include
Henderson, Beebe Draw, Kersey, Weldona, and Big Sandy Creek. Figures 4 through 9
present a summary of existing aquifer property and water level data locations in the
alluvial deposits in the Denver Basin Region along with the proposed Phase 2 well
locations. Table 2 summarizes the proposed Phase 2 investigations for each of the
areas. These locations focus on defining groundwater underflow and the interaction
with surface water at major tributaries and at strategic locations on the main stem of
the South Platte River, such as at existing stream gages, and at tributaries that
contribute significant flow to the aquifer within the mainstem of the South Platte
River based on existing information. A total of 20 new wells are proposed for the
Denver Basin Region, as shown in Table 2. Table 2 also includes the number of
existing wells and aquifer test data points that will be used at each site to meet the
data collection objectives.
In addition to the installation of new wells in the interest areas, existing wells in these
areas will be evaluated to supplement the SPDSS monitoring network for spring and
fall water level monitoring. These wells were installed and/or currently monitored by
the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Central Colorado Water Conservation District
(CCWCD), Colorado State University, and other entities. It is anticipated that up to six
additional existing wells will be added to the SPDSS monitoring network, at each of
the Henderson and Weldona interest areas, and that up to three wells will be added at
each of the Beebe Draw, Kersey, and Big Sandy Creek interest areas.
The target number of wells to be installed and monitored in each of the areas
mentioned below is subject to change if mutually agreed upon by the State and CDM,
depending on the availability of existing monitoring wells, site access, and the receipt
of additional data that would fill existing data gaps and make well installation
unnecessary. Specific locations will be identified to the State prior to initiating
fieldwork.
~. ~.1 l
Z:\SPDSS\10-CDM DELIVERABLES\PHASE 2 FIELD WORKPLAN\FINAL DRAFT\FINAL SPDSS TASK 33 2 WORK PLAN.DOC
