South Platte Decision Support System
Groundwater Component
Phase 2 Task 33.2 Field Study Work Plan
for Alluvial and Bedrock Well Installation,
Testing, and Water Level Monitoring
1.0 Introduction and Objectives
This document supersedes the previously submitted Phase 1 Task 33 Field Study
Work Plan for Alluvial and Bedrock Well Installation (CDM 2003a) (Phase 1 Work
Plan) and summarizes the Phase 2 results of Task 33 of the South Platte Decision
Support System (SPDSS), Field Study Workplan Development. The objective of the
Phase 2 Field Program is to fill data gaps identified under Tasks 31/42, 32/43, and
38/44 as described in the Scope of Work (SOW) submitted to the Colorado Water
Conservation Board (CWCB) on October 30, 2003 (CDM 2003b). All geologic drilling
and testing will be performed in accordance with State of Colorado (State) statutes
and rules (SEO 2000); if any discrepancies occur between the methods described
herein and State laws, the State requirements will prevail.
For the purposes of the SPDSS, the groundwater study area is divided into two
hydrologic regions based on the extent of the Denver Basin bedrock aquifers
(Figure 1). The Denver Basin Region includes the bedrock aquifers of the Denver
Basin and its overlying alluvium, extending downstream on the South Platte River
from approximately Chatfield Reservoir to the streamflow gage at Weldona. The
Denver Basin Region also includes Designated Basins overlying the Denver Basin and
several drainages that are tributary to the Arkansas River. The Lower South Platte
Alluvium Region includes the main stem of the South Platte River valley and
tributary mouths between Weldona and the Nebraska State Line.
By necessity, many specific elements of the field program depend on results of
ongoing analysis and availability of site access. For this reason, specific locations for
new wells are not identified, but rather the general locations where additional data
are required are provided in this work plan. As specific locations are finalized, these
will be provided to the State.
The Phase 2 field program will commence after the State provides written approval of
this Field Study Work Plan. The field program is anticipated to begin during the
summer of 2004. The basic elements of the field program are provided below.
1.1 Work Plan Organization
This work plan is organized into the following sections:
^ Section 1 presents an introduction and overview of the SPDSS Phase 2 Field
Program goals
`~ ~
Z:\SPDSS\10-CDM DELIVERABLES\PHASE 2 FIELD WORKPLAN\FINAL DRAFT\FINAL SPDSS TASK 33 2 WORK PLAN.DOC
