South Platte Decision Support System Groundwater Component Task 33 Field Study Work Plan
for Alluvial and Bedrock Well Installation, Testing, and Water Level Monitoring
3.0 Drilling, Well Installation, Testing, and Water Level
Measurement Program
This section describes field activities to be undertaken under Tasks 35, 36, 37, and 39.
3.1 Task 35, Construction and Testing of Alluvial Wells
The objective of Task 35.1, as described in Section 2.0, is to construct and/or test up to
27 wells that will provide hydrogeologic data for the alluvial groundwater system in
the Denver Basin and the Lower South Platte Alluvium Regions.
All geologic drilling and testing will be performed in accordance with State of
Colorado statutes and rules, if any discrepancies occur between the methods
described herein and State laws, State laws will prevail.
3.1.1 Pre-field Activities
Section 2 discusses data analysis tasks and general locations for new wells that were
identified to fill existing data gaps in the alluvium overlying the Denver Basin and the
Lower South Platte Alluvium. To facilitate access to drilling sites, locations for drilling
of new wells will be located on public rights-of-way, when possible, and will be
accessible for the duration of the drilling and monitoring under agreements to be
negotiated by CDM with assistance from the State. Final locations will be determined
by access to candidate drill sites. Any access fees will be paid for by the Contractor
and billed to the State. Well installation sites are not anticipated to require significant
grading or road construction for drilling. Appropriate access agreements will be
obtained for each drilling site. The State will be consulted if drilling cannot be done
on public rights-of-way. During evaluation of a candidate location for drilling,
existing geologic data in the vicinity will be obtained to determine whether site
conditions indicate the appropriate drilling method (e.g., the presence of cobbles).
CDM will submit to qualified drilling companies a bid package consisting of well
design, technical specifications, and contract documents for well drilling, sampling,
logging, testing, and completion. Costs presented in Appendix A are preliminary and
will be refined following receipt of final bids from drillers. Ifcost-effective, a
maximum of two drilling subcontractors for the 27 alluvial wells being installed by
CDM may be hired.
Approved site locations will be staked in the field and then cleared for drilling by
informing the Utility Notification Center of Colorado (UNCC) no less than 2 working
days prior to drilling. Any utilities not to be notified by UNCC will be notified
individually by CDM no less than 2 working days prior to drilling.
CDM will provide notice of intent to construct monitoring holes to the SEO no less
than 3 days prior to starting drilling. Following completion of field activities, well
permit applications and well testing and construction reports will be submitted to the
State. Well permit fees are not anticipated for wells installed on behalf of the CWCB.
~. ~.1 l
Z:\SPDSS\10-CDM DELIVERABLES\PHASE 2 FIELD WORKPLAN\FINAL DRAFT\FINAL SPDSS TASK 33 2 WORK PLAN.DOC
