South Platte Decision Support System Groundwater Component Task 33 Field Study Work Plan
for Alluvial and Bedrock Well Installation, Testing, and Water Level Monitoring
fall water level monitoring. These wells were installed and/or currently monitored
by, USGS, Town of Julesburg, Colorado State University, or other entities. It is
anticipated that up to six additional existing wells will be added to the SPDSS
monitoring network, at each of the Balzac and Julesburg interest areas, and that up to
three existing wells will be added at the Beaver Creek interest area.
The target number of wells to be installed and monitored in each of the areas
mentioned below is subject to change if mutually agreed upon by the State and CDM,
depending on the availability of existing monitoring wells, site access, and the receipt
of additional data that would fill existing data gaps and make well installation
unnecessary. Specific locations will be identified to the State prior to initiating
fieldwork.
Table 3 Lower South Platte Alluvium Region Areas of Interest for Phase 2 Alluvial Well Installation
and Testin
Number of
Potential Existing
Number of Aquifer
Number of Existing Tests in
Proposed Supplemental Interest
Area New Wells Wells Total Area Rationale and Ob'ectives
Beaver 2 3 5 2 Estimation of the groundwater
Creek flux discharging from Beaver
Creek to alluvium of main
stem of South Platte (Figure
11)
Balzac 2 6 8 2 Evaluate surface water -
groundwater interaction and
groundwater flux in the main
stem alluvium at this stream
gauge location and evaluate
impacts of irrigation diversion
on groundwater system
Fi ure 12
Julesburg 3 12 15 2 Evaluate surface water -
groundwater interaction in the
main stem alluvium at this
stream gauge location and
enhance the understanding of
the aquifer properties and
overall groundwater flux in the
vicinity of the State line
Fi ure 13
Total 7 21 28 6
2.3 Task 36, Proposed Denver Basin Region Bedrock Aquifer
Monitoring Well Location
The Denver Basin bedrock aquifers have been extensively characterized in the Front
Range Urban Corridor, including information on aquifer configuration and
characteristics. However, an evaluation of the bedrock data indicates there are
significant areas where aquifer data are not available, most notably outside of the
Front Range Urban Corridor.
