Section 3
Field Data Collection Procedures
This section describes field activities to be undertaken under Tasks 34 and 39. All
work will be done according to a CDM-approved health and safety plan to be
prepared as part of the Task 34 field preparation and access activities. The health and
safety plan will provide applicable health and safety procedures, emergency contacts,
and the route to the hospital from the general areas to be studied. All field data will
be recorded an a manner consistent with procedures provided in Appendix A.
3.1 Task 34 Field Work for streambed Conductance Data
Collection
All 30 sites will be characterized as follows:
^ A temporary benchmark will be established and all transect measurements
referenced to it.
^ Across-section of the channel geometry will be measured.
^ A preliminary boring will be sampled at each site to determine initial site
conditions and depth of streambed sediments.
^ After the depth of the streambed sediment is determined (if present), a temporary
piezometer will be driven to a depth of approximately 3 feet below the stream
bottom, or to refusal, and used to determine the vertical hydraulic gradient across
the streambed sediment.
^ Based on the results of the preliminary boring, a transect across the channel of up
to three core holes, each to a depth of up to 3 feet below the stream bottom, will be
sampled.
^ A temporary piezometer will installed at the hydraulic conductivity testing
location, within approximately 2 feet of one of the coring locations, and hydraulic
conductivity testing will be performed.
^ The temporary benchmark will be surveyed by a Colorado licensed surveyor
following the field program.
Depending on physical constraints at the particular transect, testing and coring may
be done from a boat or bridge if necessary. All transects will be photographed. All
testing methods will be performed in accordance with published methods or
applicable American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) methods. Details of
the methods to be used are presented below. Section 2.1 discusses the selection and
locations of sampling sites.
`~ ~
3-1
FINAL SPDSS T33 WORK PLAN &3-OS.DOC
