in the study are the incorporated Towns of Bow Mar,
Cherry Hills Village, Columbine Valley, Deer Trail,
Glendale, Greenwood Village, Sheridan, and the Cities
of Aurora, Englewood, and Littleton. The area of the
study is shown on the Vicinity Map (Figure 1).

.

The county lies within the South Platte River Basin,
with headwaters extEmding into the Rocky Hountains
to elevations of 14,000 feet. The waters of the South
Platte River have been appropriated for municipal
and irrigation usage. The South Platte River in Arapahoe
County flows from south to north along the western
edge of the county.

,~

In addition to the South Platte River, 21 tributary
streams are included in this study, all generally
flowing from south to north into the South Platte River.
The tributary streams studied in detail include Big Dry
Creek, Little Dry Creek, Cottonwood Creek, Cherry Creek,
Piney Creek, Sand Creek, Coal Creek, Murphy Creek, Box
Elder Creek near Watkins, Comanche and Little Comanche
Creeks near Strasburg, and West Bijou Creek near Byers.

The tributary streams studied using approximate methods
include the upper reaches of Piney Creek and Coal
Creek, Lone Tree Creek, Senac Creek, 1-05-4412 Creek,
West Box Elder Creek, Box Elder Creek, Kiowa Creek,
Wolf Creek, ComanchE: Creek, Little Comanche Creek,
West Bijou Creek, Middle Bijou Creek, East Bijou Creek,
Muddy Creek, and Deer Trail Creek. No development
pressures are foreseen on these streams for the next
5 years.

On the South Platte River, just upstream of the City
of Littleton, the U.S. Army Corps of EngineE!rS is com-
pleting construction of the Chatfield Dam. The primary
purpose of the dam is flood control and recreation. The
dam is now operational for flood control purposes and,
therefore, flood hazards downstream are based on the
dam's operation.

~

All of the defined streams were chosen with consideration
given to existing hazards and forecasted development
and construction in the next 5 years (through 1980).

..

3

........,

I
..{jj
