FLOOD INSURANCE STUDY

1.0 INTRODUCTION

'..

1.1 Purpose of Study

..

The purpose of this Flood Insurance Study is to investi-
gate the existence and severity of flood hazards in
Arapahoe County, Colorado, and to aid in the admini-
stration of the Flood Insurance Act of 1968 and the
Flood Disaster Protection Act of 1973. Initial use of
this information will be to convert Arapahoe County to
the regular program of flood insurance by the Federal
Insurance Administration. Further use of the informa-
tion will be made by local and regional planners in
their efforts to promote sound land use and flood plain
development.

1.2

Coordination

The Arapahoe County Planning Department supplied zoning
and corporate boundary maps for areas throughout the
county. Conferences were held with the county staff on
June 5, 1975, July 15 and 24, 1975. The final community
coordination meeting was held on September 16, 1975.

6

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District,
supplied base mapping, hydrology input, and information
on Chatfield Dam for the study reach of the South
Platte River. In addition, conferences were held with
the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers District Office in
Omaha, on October 16, 1974, November 27, 1974, and
March 21, 1975. Of particular significance to this
study was the Flood Plain Information Study, Denver
Metropolitan Region, Colorado, Volume IV by the U. S.
Army Corps of Engineers, dated October 1968 and Special
Flood Hazard Report to revise Flood Plain Information -
Metropolitan Regio::1, Denver, Colorado, Volume II by
the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, dated, July 1971
(References 1 and 2). The U. S. Geological Survey
(USGS) was contacted to obtain historical flow data
(References 3, 4 and 5). Maps of floodprone areas,
prepared by the USGS, showing approximate flood plain
delineations at a scale of 1:2400 were also reviewed
(Reference 6).

Q

....

-~
