CRDSS
TASK MEMORANDUM 2.03-01
Spatial Database Content and Capabilities
1.0ISSUE
This task memorandum will describe the CRDSS Spatial Database content and capabilities. The CRDSS Spatial
Database contains Geographic Information System (GIS) capabilities and spatial data in Arc/Info and GRASS
(Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) formats. The GIS capabilities are presented in the Visual Data
Browser (VDB) Interface as described in the CRDSS Users? Manual.
2.0DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
The GIS Arc/Info is used for the development of spatial data. Arc/Info coverages can be converted into a GRASS
format that can be used within the VDB Interface as part of the CRDSS Spatial Database (See Task Memorandum
2.03-02 for details). The Arc/Info coverages are kept in CRDSS to facilitate future updates and analysis. This task
memorandum will describe the coverages as they exist in the VDB Interface. These coverages are in a GRASS
format for raster, vector, sites and/or labels. All coverages have an Arc/Info source file listed with a summary in
Table 1 and in Figure 2.
2.1Spatial Database Structure
The location of the CRDSS GIS coverages is in the /crdss/gis directory. The GRASS files are stored in the
/crdss/gis/grass/crdss_grass/crdss and the Arc/Info files are stored in /crdss/gis/arc/crdss_arc. Figure 1 shows the
GRASS directory structure for CRDSS and Figure 2 shows the Arc/Info directory structure. A detailed description
and history is included for each coverage in the VDB Interface by selecting the Title Block option (see the CRDSS
Users? Manual) and in the README files saved with the Arc/Info files (see Figure 2).
2.2Spatial Database Content
During the first phases of the CRDSS project, task leaders identified data categories to be populated for CRDSS.
Categories of coverages needed were specified in the initial scope of work. This section will describe the actual data
available for these categories in the CRDSS Spatial Database. Note that all the coverages available in the VDB
Interface are also available in the CU Model. A summary of these coverages is provided in Table 1 and the location
of the files for GRASS and Arc/Info are shown in Figure 1 and 2.
Topography/Elevation
The CRDSS Spatial Database has a raster map in the GRASS crdss mapset showing the elevation in feet (every 100
feet), from 4100 Feet until 14300 Feet. Also, two elevation contour vector maps with the elevation every 100 meters
(328 feet) and 250 meters (820 feet), respectively. The original source of these coverages is the United States
Department of the Interior Geological Survey (USGS) Digital Elevation Models (DEM).
General Hydrography
The CRDSS Spatial Database has two vector maps for the entire Western Slope showing rivers and streams. One is a
100k coverage and the other is a 500k coverage. In addition to the vector maps, a raster map coverage was created
with the lakes and reservoirs on the Western Slope of Colorado. The original source of 100k data is the United States
Page 1
01/03/97 2.03-
01- Lange
