CRDSS
TASK MEMORANDUM 1.07-1
Physical Characteristics Database
Physical Characteristics Database Requirements
1.0 ISSUE
Physical characteristics data encompass the static physical characteristics of basin features that will be
used in the modeling effort. Information about the location and extent of each type of crop, reservoir,
population density, demand node, or stream segment will be stored in the spatial database. Attributes
that are used to describe these data types may be stored in the physical characteristics database. These
attributes will be used by the different modeling tasks.
The physical characteristics database resides within and is part of an ove rall CRDSS relational database
as described in Task 1.05. The database entities within the overall design that hold the physical
characteristics data are as follows:
Manmade_structure, Structure_aka, Irr_struct, Irrig_acres, Non-
irrig_acre, Stream, Stream_aka, Minimum_flow_reach, Water_right,
Terms_and_conditions, Transfer, Abandonment, Associated_structure,
crop_character, crop_growth, soil_coeff, creature_coeff, Reservoir,
Area_capacity_table, Non_Jurisdictional_dam.
2.0 DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS
This document describes the various required physical characteristics data that have been identified in
Phase I.
The database task leaders have met with the modeling task leaders to determine the data needed for the
modeling efforts and to make sure the data will be in the correct format for the models and in the most
efficient storage in the various databases. The task leaders for Task 1.14, Consumptive Use Model, and
Task 1.15, Water Rights Planning Model, have prepared memoranda that document the data needs of
each of these tasks.
This document summarizes the physical characteristics data needed by both of these tasks, with an
emphasis on the Gunnison River basin. The data types are summarized in Table 1.07-1, and the
anticipated population schedule is found in Table 1.07-2 in Task 1.07 of the scope of work.
Crop Growth Stage Characteristics
Crop growth stage characteristics describe the evaporation occurring from a specific crop at a specific
stage of growth. One source for these data is a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) standard
reference, ?Irrigation Water Requirements - Technical Release 21,? dated 1970. These data are needed
to operate the consumptive use model and may also be obtained from the Soil Conservation Service
(SCS) and from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) manual Evapotranspiration and
Irrigation Water Requirements . The database entity that will hold this data is the entity.
crop_growth
This entity holds the values needed to plot a growth curve.
1
A275 01.08.95 1.07-1 IDS Group
