Phase I Activities and Findings
The Phase I UIP activities are summarized below.
Meetings with User Groups . Meetings during Phase I focused on project coordination and
reporting, technical subcommittee discussions relative to specific tasks, and the design of the
user involvement program.
Group Workshops . No group workshops were held during Phase I.
Written Documentation . A draft of a CRDSS Summary Report was prepared during Phase I. It
is scheduled for review by the CRDSS development team, State project management team.
Briefing Room Prototype . The primary activities relating to the Briefing Room were to: (1)
become familiar with the UNIX environment, and (2) develop a computer-based tutorial using
mosaic
the public-domain software. The UNIX activities included establishment of network
mosaic
communications with RTi, to transfer files and other utility operations. The software is
a distributed hypermedia system designed for information discovery and retrieval over the
Mosaic
Internet. provides a unified interface to the various protocols, data formats (including
color images), and information archives used on the Internet and provides a powerful, cost-
effective means for user discovery, use, and sharing. A computer-based tutorial will be
developed which can be used to explain the project, illustrate water management scenarios, and
present other background information. For example, an extended version of the CRDSS
mosaic
Summary Report will be incorporated into the system so that a user can interact with it
at the Briefing Room. It is anticipated that the water management scenarios can be displayed
mosaic
using , and that feedback on the scenarios and other aspects of the CRDSS can be
obtained. More details related to the Briefing Room are provided in Task Memoranda 1.05-1
and 1.05-2.
mosaic
Other User Enhancements . A PC Windows version of the software has been installed
which can be used as a distant learning medium for people interested in the CRDSS. The
mosaic mosaic
/PC has a similar functionality to the workstation , and it is expected that the
mosaic
workstation demos can be ported to the PC with little effort. This will allow a user not
having a workstation to obtain a functionality similar to the workstation. The transfer method
mosaic
would be simply to provide one or two diskettes with the program and CRDSS
documentation.
Monitoring and Background Research . Background research primarily involved the review of
literature and reports on Colorado River water management issues. The Colorado River Basin
Bibliography is one outcome of that research; the bibliography was conducted primarily for
curriculum development purposes at CU-Denver, but it is applicable to the CRDSS. Selected
publications listed therein have been obtained. A lecture on Colorado River water management
issues was prepared as part of CU-Denver graduate course activities and is available for this
project.
A database on Colorado legislative activity was reviewed and resulted in a listing of sponsored
bills related to water issues. Information from previous years is not available.
3
A275 05.10.94 1.05-27 Johnson
