Electronic Suggestion Box
One feature that is available is an electronic suggestion box which allows guest users to enter their
comments about the system. This feature will allow users to enter comments as they are running the
system, not just after they are done. Although person-to-person comments are valuable and will be
accepted, it is more useful to the CRDSS development team to receive written comments on specific
issues (e.g., ?the diversion structure detail screen is too complicated?...?I don't trust your data for...?).
Consequently, the best way to record these comments is to allow users to type them in as
components of the CRDSS are being run.
The simplest way to implement an electronic suggestion box is to create a login account on the
Briefing Room machine to which electronic mail (E-mail) can be sent. For example, create a login
account called ?crdss-suggest.? A wrapper can then be created so that guest users can create
suggestion messages and mail them to the special account. Alternatively, a system alias can be set
up to alias the ?crdss-suggest? user to an existing user or users. For example, suggestions could be
forwarded to Ross Bethel of the State and a representative of the RTi team. Having this type of
electronic suggestion box would also allow users who have access to the Internet to directly E-mail
suggestions. It is anticipated that this feature would become more important as the system develops
and more users have access to working products on the Briefing Room machine.
Currently, comments can be E-mailed to the address:
crdss@cando.dwr.co.gov
Mosaic
The mail will be forwarded to the appropriate person. A interface is also being developed to
process user feedback.
Electronic Newsletter
E-mail could also be used to distribute an electronic newsletter for CRDSS. Information could be
distributed automatically by using an E-mail distribution list.
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The main purpose of the CRDSS is to provide analysis tools to water resource managers. A
secondary purpose is to bring new technology to water resource managers and others at the State.
An important feature of a network of workstations is electronic communications. This feature should
be utilized to its fullest in the CRDSS by using the Briefing Room machine as an electronic
communications center.
The following conclusions and recommendations are made for the issues presented at the beginning
of this memorandum:
An electronic communications center is necessary because such a center provides a
?
convenient focal point for project E-mail and documentation. E-mail will become more
important throughout the life of the CRDSS project as more users (State personnel) gain
access to the Internet.
2
A275 01.08.95 1.05-1 Malers
