Hydrologic Unit 14050002, Rio Blanco County
The USBR recommends continuing to use the Meek er station for this unit and with respect to
temperature the results of the investigation agree. With regard to precipitation, analysis of precipitation
data and USGS maps found that local orographic e ffects influence weather patterns. For example,
average annual precipitation at Meeker No. 2, Ha milton, Pyramid and Marvine Ranch is 12.45 inches,
16.10 inches, 21.51 inches and 25.02 inches, respectivel y. Therefore, since the Hamilton weather
station, which is a precipitation only st ation, is located closest to the majority of irrigated lands in this
unit, it is recommended for use in this unit.
Hydrologic Unit 14050003, Moffat County
The USBR recommends a change from exclusive use the Baggs, Wyoming station to a 50/50 split
between Baggs and Maybell. The use of two stati on is recommended however the weighing of irrigated
area between the two stations needs to be adjusted. It is recommended that the Baggs station be used
for all irrigated land upstream of Greasewood Gulch and Maybell be used for all irrigated lands
downstream of Greasewood Gulch.
Hydrologic Unit 14050005, Garfield County
The maps provided by CSU IDS group showed no i rrigated land in this unit. The USBR recommended
changing from the Meeker station to the Little Hills station because the Little Hills station is closer.
This recommendation should be adopted; however, the Little Hills stati on was closed by NOAA in
1992. Therefore, it is recommended that NOAA be cont acted and encouraged to re-activate the Little
Hills station. If data from the Little Hills sta tion is unavailable, the Marvine Ranch station is
recommended as an alternative.
Hydrologic Unit 14050005, Moffat County
The USBR recommended changing from the Meeker sta tion to a 50/50 split of the Meeker and Maybell
stations for reasons not specified. The maps pr ovided by CSU IDS group showed no irrigated land in
this unit; therefore, the representa tiveness of the proportioning by the USBR can not be verified. The
Massadona weather station, which was established in 1987, is located just west of this hydrologic unit
in topography similar to this unit?s topography; th erefore its use is recommended. For analysis of
periods when the Massadona data is unavailable, the Maybell station is recommended.
Hydrologic Unit 14050005, Rio Blanco County
For this unit, the USBR recommended the Meeker St ation. Based upon the location of irrigated area
with respect to the weat her stations, differences in precipitati on at the stations and topography, two
stations are recommended for this unit.
The Marvine Ranch station is recommended for land areas tributary to the White River above its
confluence with Veatch Gulch. This area consists of lands located along the White River, Miller Creek,
North Elk Creek, Big Beaver Creek and Marvine Creek.
Meeker 3W is recommended for lands downstream of the White River and Veatch Gulch confluence. It
is important to note that the Meeker station has been moved twice. In 1968, The "Meeker" station was
relocated to the "Meeker No. 2" site and in 1992, the "Meeker No. 2" station was relocated to the
"Meeker 3W."
