Title
CRDSS Task 2.09-14 - Review of USRB Weather Station and Recommended New Stations for the Upper Colorado River Basin
Description
In the Phase I CRDSS Task Memorandum 1.14-1, it was recommended that the weather station sites be checked for representativeness. This memorandum will serve to meet that recommendation as it pertains to the upper stem of the Colorado River.

For this unit, the CULR used the Green Mountain Dam station. For reasons stated previously, the
continued use of this station is not recommended, instead it is recommended that the Kremmling
station be used to estimate consumptive use on irrigated lands.
Hydrologic Unit 14010002, Summit County
For this unit, the CULR used the Green Mountain Dam station. Based upon an analysis of
precipitation and the location of irrigated lands, it is recommended that the precipitation at Green
Mountain Dam and temperature data at Kremmling be utilized to estimate consumptive use of
irrigated lands in this unit.
Hydrologic Unit 14010003, Eagle County
For this unit, the USBR utilizes only the Eagle FAA airport station. Since 1985 a weather station has
been maintained at Vail. The average annual precipitation from 1985 through 1990 at Vail and Eagle
is 16.8 and 11.0 inches, respectively. Weather data was collected at Avon from 1981 through 1989
and the average annual precipitation was 11.97 inches during that period. Because of the large
amount of golf course irrigation in the Vail vicinity and the difference in precipitation between Vail
and Eagle FAA, it is recommended that the Eagle FAA airport station be used for irrigated areas
downstream of Wolcott and the Vail station be used for irrigated areas upstream of Wolcott.
The Eagle FAA airport station was discontinued as a climatological station on July 21, 1994. Based
upon personal communication with Nolan Doesken, it is possible that the station may be restarted. If
the station is not put back into service, it is recommended that the Glenwood Springs station be used
in its place.
Hydrologic Unit 14010004, Eagle County
The USBR's use of the Meredith and Glenwood Springs stations is acceptable; however, review of
the map of irrigated areas found that the irrigated area should not be split 50-50 between the two
stations. The Meredith station should be used for estimating crop consumptive use for irrigated areas
tributary to the Fryingpan River. The Glenwood Springs station should be used for estimating crop
consumptive use for irrigated areas not tributary to the Fryingpan River. The USBR recommendation
of dropping Meredith should not be used because the elevation difference between the irrigated land
tributary to the Fryingpan River and Meredith station is less than the elevation difference between
the irrigated land and Glenwood Springs.
Hydrologic Unit 14010005, Mesa County.
The CULR used Grand Junction and Fruita 1 W weather stations for this unit. There are four
weather stations, Fruita 1 W, Grand Junction Airport, Grand Junction 6 ESE, Collbran, and Palisade
which were considered for use in this unit. Based upon a review of topography and precipitation
records, consumptive use for the irrigated lands upstream of the confluence of the Colorado River
and Plateau Creek should be calculated using Collbran. Collbran's average annual precipitation is
about 3 to 4 inches greater than at the other stations and most of the irrigated land for this area is in
the vicinity of Collbran.
The somewhat agricultural location of the Grand Junction 6 ESE station is much better than the
Grand Junction Airport location; therefore, its use is recommended for the irrigated area east of the
airport and downstream of the confluence of the Colorado River and Plateau Creek. Fruita 1 W is
3
12.3.96 12.09-14 - Walter
