Management Allowed Depletion (MAD)
Management allowed depletion is the maximum amount of water that is allowed to be depleted from the
soil root zone without any perceived stress in the crop.
Mean Crop Coefficients (Kcm)
Mean crop coefficients include wet soil effects after rain or irrigation on crop consumptive use, such as
soil drying properties.
Reference Crop Evapotranspiration (Ref ET)
Reference crop evapotranspiration is the rate at which water, if readily available, would be removed from
the soil and plant surface expressed as the depth of water evaporated and transpired from a reference
crop such as grass (ETo) or alfalfa (ETr).
Surface Runoff (Ro)
Surface runoff is the quantity of precipitation or irrigation water that does not enter the soil profile (water
in excess of infiltration rates) and therefore is not available to crops. This water is transported to surface
water features such as rivers or streams.
Transpiration (Trans)
Transpiration is the process by which water in plants is transferred as vapor into the air.
Permanent Wilting Point (PWP)
The permanent wilting point is the moisture percentage, also on a dry weight basis, at which plants can
no longer obtain sufficient moisture to satisfy moisture requirements and will wilt permanently unless
moisture is added to the soil profile.
3.0 CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
It is recommended that these definitions be adopted for the CRDSS.
4
A275 01.09.95 1.14-8 CSU IDS
