SPDSS Memorandum
Final
To: Ray Alvarado & Ray Bennett
From: LRE -Kara Sobieski & Erin Wilson
Subject: Task 76.8-1 -Create Unfilled Blaney-Griddle Statewide Climate Scenario
Date: October 9, 2005
Introduction
This memorandum presents the general approach and results for the following portion of this
Task 76.8 subtask
• Create Statewide monthly unfilled Blaney-Griddle climate scenarios for the period 1950
through 2004
This memorandum documents the creation of the statewide unfilled Blaney-Griddle climate
dataset. Previous DSS efforts developed monthly filled climate datasets for the Colorado River
Basins (Upper Colorado, San Juan/Dolores, Gunnison, Yampa and White Basins), South Platte
River Basin, and Rio Grande Basin. Monthly filled climate datasets for the Arkansas and
Republican Basins were developed in conjunction with Task 76 and documented in Task 76.8-2
- Create Filled Climate Station Scenario for the Arkansas and Republican River Basins.
Approach and Results
Climate stations were selected for inclusion in the statewide climate scenario based on
engineering judgment and cooperation with the State in development of the following criteria:
HydroBase contains both temperature and precipitation data during the 1940 through
2004 period.
Climate station has more than 60 months of mean temperature data in HydroBase.
The following approach was used to select the climate stations for inclusion in the statewide
unfilled dataset:
1. Monthly average temperature data for NOAA climate stations stored in HydroBase were
extracted using TSTooI, run separately for the West and East Slope.
2. The number of months of data for the 1940 through 2004 study period was determined
for each climate station using the TSTooI "Data Limits Summary" report, run separately
for the West and East Slope stations.
3. Monthly total precipitation data for NOAA climate stations store in HydroBase were
extracted using TSTooI, run separately for the West and East Slope.
4. Climate stations resulting from the temperature data query in TSTooI were compared to
climate stations resulting from the precipitation data query. Stations not appearing in
both query results were eliminated from the overall dataset.
