basin is generally steep mountain canyons and, based on contour mapping and an
understanding of the area, Teller County irrigated acreage should not be included in
SPDSS efforts.
^ Denver County -Denver County is essentially entirely urban. CASS does not report any
irrigated acreage for Denver County for the period 1950 through 2002.
^ Elbert County -Elbert County provides runoff to both the South Platte River basin and
the Arkansas River basin. Based on satellite imagery delineation of irrigated lands, it is
estimated that 50 percent of the irrigated acreage is in the South Platte River basin and 50
percent is in the Arkansas River Basin
^ El Paso County - Only a very small portion of El Paso County provides runoff to the
South Platte River basin, nearly the entire county is in the Arkansas River basin.
Therefore, it is recommended that El Paso County irrigated acreage should not be
included in SPDSS efforts.
^ Washington County -Washington County provides runoff to both the South Platte River
basin and to the Republican River basin. Based on satellite imagery delineation of
irrigated lands, it is estimated that 25 percent of the irrigated acreage is in the South
Platte River basin and 75 percent is in the Republican River basin.
As noted above, some of the reported irrigated acreage is not specifically tied to a county, only to
a Colorado Agricultural Statistics District. The Northeast District is completely within the South
Platte River basin, however only a small percent of the Northwest and Mountains District and the
East Central District are within either the North Platte River or South Platte River basins.
Therefore, we recommend all additional acreage under the "combined crops" categories for the
Northeast district be included in SPDSS efforts but none of the additional acreage under the
"combined crops" categories be included for either the Northwest and Mountains District or the
East Central District.
Reported Crops
During the study period of 1950 to 2002, CASS reported county-level information for the "Field
Crop" types shown in Table 2. This data varies in completeness from county to county and from
crop to crop. Because crops are grown both dry-land and under irrigation systems, CASS further
divides the crops shown in Table 2 into irrigated and non-irrigated categories. In addition, for
some crop categories, CASS also reports both planted and harvested acreage.
