Every five years, the National Agriculture Statistics Service (MASS) produce a Census of
Agriculture which includes the state of Colorado. The census is available in a hard-copy printed
report or on CDs which contain three sets of census data spanning a 15-year period.
CASS Data
The following information about the CASS data was obtained either from the annual CASS
publications, or from Lance Fretwell, Deputy State Statistician for the Colorado Agricultural
Statistics Service. CASS divides the state into six Agricultural Statistics Districts; each district
has a unique number identifier. The South Platte and North Platte basins include all of the
Northeast District (20), parts of the Northwest & Mountains District (10), and parts of the East
Central District (60), as shown in Figure 1. Crops are either reported under the individual
county or aggregated and reported under the district number and the "Combined Crops"
category. For example, to determine all of the crop data for the Northeast District, the data for
both the individual counties within the Northeast District and additional data from the "D20
Combined Crops" category have to be included. Table 1 provides a list of the Counties in the
South Platte and North Platte Basins and the associated CASS District name and number.
Figure 1
Agricultural Statistics Districts in the North and South Platte River Basins
Page 2 of 13
