<br />FLOOD INSURANCE STUDY <br /> <br />1.0 INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />...~ <br /> <br />.. <br /> <br />i> <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />,~~"",.:- <br /> <br />L. <br /> <br />l.l <br /> <br />Purpose of !Study <br /> <br />The purpose of this Flood Insurance Study is to investigate the <br />existence ~nd severity of flood hazards in the unincorporated areas <br />of Mesa County, Colorado, and to aid in the administration of the <br />National Fiood Insurance Act of 1968 and the Flood Disaster Protection <br />I <br />Act of 1973. Initial use of this information will be to convert Mesa <br />County to the regular program of flood insurance by the Federal <br />Insurance 4dministration. Further use of the information will be <br />made by l09al and regional planners in their efforts to promote sound <br />land use and flood plain development. <br /> <br />l.2 <br /> <br />Coordinatic?n <br />I <br />, <br />In additio~ to agencies in Mesa County, the following agencies and <br />establishm~nts were contacted prior to and during the course of this <br />study to o~tain information: U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. <br />, <br />Geologicalisurvey, U.S. Forest Service, National Weather Service, <br />Colorado Division of Highways, Grand Junction Public Library, Gateway <br />Elementary School, Grand Valley Irrigation District, Grand Junction <br />Chamber of Commerce, Palisade Tribune, Fruita Times, and Grand Junc- <br />tion Daily Sentinel. Numerous telephone contacts were made during <br />the course of the study to clarify and refine data gathered. The <br />search for photographs of past floods included contacts with local <br />residents as well as local newspapers. None had photographs suitable <br />for use in! the report. <br /> <br />The initiat coordination meeting for this Flood Insurance study was <br />held on January l3, 1975, with representatives of Mesa County, the <br />Colorado W~ter Conservation Board, the Federal Insurance Administra- <br />tion, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in attendance. Flood <br />I <br />insurance,j in general, and the Mesa County Flood Insurance Study, in <br /> <br />particular, were discussed. Areas for detailed study were selected. <br /> <br />The intermediate coordination meeting was held on October 19, 1976. <br />, <br />Members of: the Mesa County Commission and representatives of the Mesa <br />I <br />County Plapning Department, the Town of Palisade, the Colorado Water <br />Conservati9n Board and other State agencies, the U.S. Army Corps of <br />Engineers,! local consulting engineers, and local financial interests <br />attended the meeting. Representatives of the Federal Insurance <br />Administration were unable to be present at this meeting. Technical <br />data generkted for the study were presented and reviewed. There were <br />, <br />no questions or discussions indicating that the local interests <br />believed the technical data to be incorrect or inadequate. No comments <br />, <br />were receired from Mesa County officials during a 2-week period <br />requested for consideration of the study data. <br /> <br />" <br /> <br />,.~ <br /> <br />,~ <br />
