A flood plain study for Sutherland Creek in the Crystal Hills area of
Manitou Springs was printed in July 1975 (Reference 13). The 100-year
flood discharge of 750 cfs determined in that study was found to be
too low because an assumption was made in that study that Fountain and
Sutherland Creeks would have coincident flood events. The contributing
discharge of Sutherland Creek to Fountain Creek at their confluence
is l,OOO cfs in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report (Reference 3),
and the 1975 flood plain study for Sutherland Creek assumed that this
was the total discharge of the 100-year storm on Sutherland Creek.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers report did not assume coincident flood
events on the two streams, and the Sutherland Creek discharge of l,OOO
cfs at the mouth actually represents a far more frequent event.

'ta

~

Flood boundary delineations for this Flood Insurance Study supersede
those shown on the Flood Hazard Boundary Map (Reference 14).

This study is authoritative for the purposes of the National Flood Insur-
ance Program; data presented herein either supersede or are compatible
with all previous determinations.

7.0 LOCATION OF DATA

Information concerning the pertinent data used in preparation of this
study can be obtained by contacting the Natural Clnd Te.chnological Hazards
Division, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Building 7l0, Denver
Federal Center, Lakewood, Colorado 80225.

.

8.0 BIBLIOGRAPHY AND REFERENCES

l.
