,-~

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Many individuals contributed to the data collection and analyses
discussed in this report. Several National Weather Service personnel
provided assistance in snow accumulation algorithm development and
testing at the Albany, NY, Cleveland, OH, Denver, CO, and
Minneapolis, MN, Weather Forecast Offices. The main contacts in these
respective offices were John Quinlan, Bob LaPlante, Dave Imy, and Rich
Naistat, who were all quite cooperative and generous with their time.
Personnel at the National Severe Storms Laboratory were very helpful in
converting the SAA to real-time use on their WDSS system, and Kevin
Thomas and J.T. Johnson deserve special recognition. The assistance of
Mark Fresch and Lt. Co!. Andy White of the OSF in coordinating the
SAA work is gratefully acknowledged.

Many people were involved in data collection, and Jack McPartland of
the Bureau of Reclamation deserves special mention for gage site
selection and installation. Dr. James Heimbach of the University of
North Carolina at Asheville and Dr. Paul Smith of the South Dakota
School of Mines and Technology provided significant technical advice
to this project, including several suggestions for improving this report.
Ra Aman provided considerable programming support.

This work was primarily supported by the WSR-88D Operational
Support Facility and the Next Generation Weather Radar Program, with
additional support provided by the Bureau of Reclamation's Research and
Technology Transfer Program directed by Dr. Stanley Ponce.

U.S. Department of the Interior
Mission Statement

The Mission of the Department of the Interior is to protect and provide access to
our Nation's natural and cultural heritage and honor our trust responsibilities to
tribes.

The information contained in this report regarding commercial products or firms
may not be used for advertising or promotional purposes and is not to be construed
as an endorsement of any product or firm by the Bureau of Reclamation.

11
