GLOSSARY

These definitions are intended to assist the reader with
technical terms that are unfamiliar or that are used with specific
meanings in the context of this proposed plan.

Adiabatic diagram--A thermodynamic chart or graph representing
values of pressure, density, temperature, water vapor or
functions thereof, wuch that the adiabatic and saturation
processes are satisfied.

Cloud-time cross sections--A two-dimensional, representative
picture of a three dimensional entity such as the atmosphere
above the earth's surface. Data presented could include
projected changes in the cloud and precipitation character-
istics with respect to time.

Cumuliform clouds--Generally descriptive of all clouds whose
principal characteristic is vertical development in the
form of rising mounds, domes or towers.

Evapotranspiration--The combined processes by which water is
transferred from the earth's surface to the atmosphere;
evaporation of liquid or solid water plus transpiration
from plants.

FAX products or facsimile charts--Any graphic form of weather
information, usually charts or maps that are plotted and
analyzed at a central weather station, which are trans-
mitted via radio or wire to individual weather stations
where it is reproduced by facsimile equipment.

400 rob 1evel--A level or height in the atmosphere
determined by the atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric
pressures near sea level average about 1000 rob and near
24,000 feet above sea level average about 400 rob.

ice nuc1ei--any particles which serve as centers or individual
nucleus in the formation of ice crystals in the atmosphere.

MSL (Mean Sea Level)--The average height of the sea surface and
is used in meteorology as the reference surface for all
altitudes.

Man. CNG (Manual Cloud Nuclei Generator)--A cloud nuclei generator
operated and controlled by a trained operator.

Mesoscale--A small area or a small region such as a river valley
as compared to the total mountain and valley region within a
state.

MET section (meteorology section)--The department within a business
organization which deals with meteorological activities such
as forecasting or research.

MET system (meteorological system)--Referring to meteorological
insturments and equipment that are installed to collect data
on meteorological parameters such as wind, temperature,
humidity, pressure and precipitation.

-87-
