Page 27

to 9100 ft, 10,000 ft, and 11,000 ft. Higher altitudes will
usually be prohibited because of the high density of air
traffic into and out of Phoenix. The heading direction will
be parallel to the wind direction at 9100 ft. A pop-up
sounding may be made to altitudes above 11,000 ft if FAA
approval can be obtained. The crest-line pass will be
approximately along the 45 n.mi. DME arc from the 175 to the
205 deg. radial, entering from either end. The approach to
this region will be from Happy Jack to the pivot point at
11,000 ft foll owed by a spi ral descent to 9100 ft to the
downwind side of the pivot point. A return to the Happy Jack
region may be made at 9600 ft.

The aircraft may be requested to perform the series of altitude
steps over either region, depending on cloud availability. The
aircraft may be requested to stay with one of the regions, work
two series of steps in one and then one in the other, work one
series in each and then shift to a T&D study with SF6, or any
other pattern speci fi ed by the Bureau ai rcraft sci enti st. A
series of altitude steps may be terminated whenever the
aircraft climbs above significant clouds and it may then
descend for the crest-line pass.
