<br />Page 25 <br /> <br />when no suitable conditions are present in the other areas. <br />The discussion below will concentrate mainly on operations over <br />the Happy Jack region, but a similar pattern will also apply <br />to the Payson area. <br /> <br />1. Microphysics missions <br />When directed to launch a mission the crew will obtain a <br />forecast estimate of the 9000 ft winds. The aircraft will <br />climb from the Prescott airport to 17,000 ft while proceeding <br />to Happy Jack which is located on the 225 deg. radial at 35.6 <br />n.mi. from the Winslow VORTAC. This point will be used as <br />the navigation reference point for all passes made over Happy <br />Jack. A spiral descent will be made above Happy Jack to <br />9600 ft which is the lowest permissible flight level. <br /> <br />The first pass over Happy Jack will be from the downwind side <br />towards the upwind side at a heading according to the <br />preflight estimate of wind direction. The actual wind <br />direction will be measured on this pass. The pass may <br />terminate over the windward foothills or be extended to the <br />airspace limits if there are indications of the potential for <br />more liquid water or snow ahead.
