Seeding studies and targeting model verification

a. 17 February 1993 case study

By way of example, the case of 17 February 1993
will be described, as it represents a day typical of con-
ditions in which seeding would normally be performed,
although temperatures were slightly colder than nor-
mal. Of the four days having both SF6 and propane
releases, 17 February provided the best-documented
case of seeding effects. On 17 February, seeding was
conducted (13 L h -1 propane) from site 7 from 1630
to 1730 UTC and from site 9 from 1730 to 1830 UTe.
Temperatures at the dispensers were near -50e. Ra-
diometric liquid water averaged 0.1 mm. This is shown
with other meteorological data collected at the ICC
observatory in Fig. 16. Mountaintop icing data

showed liquid water contents of 0.1 g m -3, as shown
in Fig. 17.
Within the eight aircraft intersections of the site 7
SF6 plume (refer back to Tables 3 and 5), no definitive
seeding effects were observed. Data from both aircraft
liquid water probes indicated that liquid water contents
averaged less than 0.02 g m-3, and cloud droplet con-
centrations averaged less than 25 cm-3 within the eight
plumes. Results presented in the next section indicate
that predicted particle trajectories may be below the
aircraft sampling level.
The plume from site 9 was intersected six times (re-
fer back to Tables 4 and 6). Four had apparent seeding
signatures-two over the valley and two over the
ridge. Liquid water contents in site 9 valley plumes
averaged 0.11 g m-3. Pass 13, along the valley, shows
