The best-documented case is for 9 March,
on which plume dimensions were rather consistent for
both sites. The average distances downwind were 34
and 38 kIn for sites 7 and 9, respectively. Thus, for a
10 m s -1 wind, the plume would be about 1 h down-
wind. For this day, plume characteristics showed
widths of 15 and 14 kIn, and average SF6 concentra-
tions of 23 and 25 ppt for sites 7 and 9, respectively.

TIME (UTe)

17 FEB 93 P10

FrG. 19. Same as Fig. 18 but for pass 10 along the ridge. The SF6 plume
immediately preceding the site 9 plume is from site 7.

Aircraft altitudes at plume interception were 2475 or
275 m above the release altitude. Figure 14 shows
plume interceptions for one downwind leg on 9 March.
The plumes cover a horizontal distance of over 31 kIn,
having merged at this downwind distance. A plan view
of all SF6 interceptions for this day is shown in Fig. 15.
Predicted locations of these interceptions by the oper-
tional targeting model (see section 4) for sites 7 and 9
are annotated. Results for 16 March are much more
erratic, indicating that the plumes may be sporadically
rising up to aircraft altitudes during these downwind
passes.
