DEFINITIONS

Major Basin: One of the twelve major basins assigned for analysis in this
investigation.
Study Watershed: One of the watersheds for which incremental runoff and time dis-
tribution have been determined specifically in the hydrologic analysis.
Massif: One of the major mountain range entit:l(-\s with ospecified orientation for
which incremental precipitation resulting from a hypothetical cloud seeding
operation has been computed in the meteorological phase of this report.
Massif Unit: That portion of a given massif lying wholly within a given study
watershed.
Elevation Zone: That area lying within a given 1000 foot elevation band within
a given massif unit.
Index Precipitation Stations: Precipitation stations lying on or near a profile
which have been utilized to describe seasonal precipitation quantity and dis-
tribution applicable to the massif. Additional precipitation, sn01N and runoff
data have been used to supplement index station data.
Precipitation Topographic Profile: A specific profile across a given massif for
which incremental precipitation amounts have been computed.
Average Topographic Profile: An average profile across a given massif which has
been used in the model computations of incremental precipitation amounts.
Time Lag: The air mass depicted by a sounding from a rawinsonde station is assumed
representative of the air mass over a massif at some later or earlier time.
The time difference is referred to as a time lag.

iii
