Weather modification for special applications

The RRRDI has conducted a wide variety of special applications of
weather modification on a large-scale basis. Several of these programs
are unique and represent new applications of weather modification
technology.

a. Fog dispersal

Using internationally established techniques the RRRDI, since 1982,
has conducted an experimental fog dispersal project to improve
growing conditions for speciality crops in the mountainous areas of
northern Thailand. These operations have been conducted in the
Chiang Mai Province during December, January, and February. The
annual number of operational days has ranged from 61 to 82 per year.
It is anticipated .that the number of provinces receiving assistance
under this program will increase in the future, if additional funding
and equipment becomes available to the Instit.ute. No scientific eva-
luation has been prepared concerning this program to date.

b. Industrial pollution abatement

In 1973 (14 operational days) and 1974 (22 operational days), during
the months of April and May, the RRRDI conducted cloud seeding opera-
tions in the lower Mae Klong River Basin to relieve stream pollution
caused by wastewater discharges from agro-industrial plants.
