..

1. Major development of the radar and aircraft processing programs were

completed. These are discussed in the body of the report.

2. Ku-band radar tapes were reduced, quality-checked, and provided to

all interested parties. Ku-band reflectivity time/height: diagrams

and tabular displays of cloud top height, maximum dBZ, and other

parameters were provided to all project participants on 21 July

,....,

1983.

3. The data tapes from the Cheyenne II aircraft were reduced and processed.

This included 18 field tapes and 5 navigation tapes from the FAA. Six

processed tapes that contained the complete state paramE~ter and FSSP

reduced data for the total program were prepared from the original

field tapes. Hardcopy of these data were distributed to all

.

participants on 21 July 1983.

report.

4. Two interpretative case studies were carried out using rawinsonde,

Full details are provided in the

aircraft, precipitation, and mountaintop liquid water measurements.

The fi.rst of these cases was for storm 9 which occurred on 8 February.

The second was for storm 14 which occurred on 28 February.. The

February 8 storm involved an area-wide cloud system with some

convective periods. The February 28 storm was not classified by

North American Weather Consultants for the period when the aircraft

flew but was a convective, cellular type cloud system.

'!

Several tentative conclusions appear justified based on the initial

analyses of the cloud water portions of the 1983 field program.

1. A substantial number of hours of blanket orographic clouds occurred

during the 1983 field experiments. These ~Tere' very orographic in

nature and produced nearly half of the observed precipitation. Only

;;

ii

< ~:--
