ABSTRACT

.

An excellent data set was obtained during the state of Utah research

field expedition in the Tushar Mountains during the winter of 1982-83. Direct

(aircraft and mountaintop) cloud measurements were supplemented by remote

sensors which included Ku-band and C-band radars, a. polarization lidar, and a

dual-wavelength microwave radiometer. Additional observations provided

information on the transport of seeding material.

This report covers analyses carried out at Colorado State University

related to the research objective of describing the liquid water contents

of Tushar Mountain clouds. Liquid water content is one parameter 'which is

strongly relatl;ld to weather modification potential of these c.loud systems. The

large resource commitment necessary for the field program nec.essitated restricting

this first year analysis effort related to the liquid water objective. Final

analyses will require further sophisticated reduction, processing, and analysis

of the aircraft, radiometer, and radar data sets. This report covers CSU

analysis efforts related to:

1. Software development to process and analyze Ku-band and a.ircraft

data sets.

.......

2. Displaying the Ku-band observations.

3. Processing and interpreting aircraft observations, including those

related to aircraft navigation, state parameters, and s,upercooled water.

4. Interpretative analyses of two of the storm periods for which aircraft

data are available.

.,.

Climatological analyses of the storm systems during the field program

to place the case study analyses in their proper context.

The significance of the preliminary findings are discussed.

5.

..

The following is a brief description of the work accomplished in connection

with each of the CSU areas of" analysis.

i

-
