'"

3.2 Instrumentation and Types of Measurements
3.2.1 Surface
A network of 16 special surface stations will be set up in the
Texas HIPLEX area. Data from four additional stations will be obtained from
the National Weather Service or the Air Force. The locations of the
special surface stations and the NWS/Air Force stations are shown in
Fig. 3. 1.1.
The data to be collected at E=ach station will consist of approxi-
mately 10-min averages of wind speed, wind direction, temperature, relative
humidity, and pressure each hour on the hour every day during the field
program. Instrumentation at each of the special surface stations will
consist of a hygrothermograph for measuring temperature and relative
humidity, a microbarograph for measuring pressure, and an MRI automatic
weather station for measuring wind direction and speed and temperature.
A standard instrument shelter will house the instrumentation at each
station. Additional data of the same type will be obtained from the NWS
and Air Force stations although the types of instrumentation used may be
somewhat different.
Rainfall data will be collect:ed at 81 locations by fencepost gages
and at 81 locations with recording rain gages. The location of tlle fence-
post gages are shown in Fig. 3.2.1.1, and the location'of the recording
rain gages in Fig. 3.2.1.2.
3.2.2 ,Rawinsonde
Atmospheric soundings will be collected on a maximum of 16 days at
four locations on mesoscale operational days during the period JWle 1-
July 15, 1978. Soundings will be made at 3-hr intervals on these days
beginning at 1500 GMT (lOOO COT) and ending 0300 GMT (2200 CDT). An RD-65
rawinsonde system will be used at Big Spring and a GMD-lb at Robert Lee
and Post, while soundings will be purchased from the National Weather
Service station at Midland. All sounding stations provide comparable data
although the tracking equipment is somewhat different. All stations will
use identical radiosondes. Special rawinsonde runs will be made as needed
at any of the sites, but these special runs will be made primarily at
Big Spring.
The raw data for each sounding will consist of baseline in--
formation, azimuth and elevation angles obtained from tracking thl3 radio-
sonde, and a TMQ-5 chart containing ordinate values for temperatujre
and humidity for each pressure contact. All soundings made at Biq Spring

.

;;

5
