DEFINITIONS

"

Mesoscale operational day: A day during which rawinsonde soundin':Js are
made at Midland, Big Spring, Rob~~rt Lee, and Post at 3-hr inte:rvals
for a 12-hr period beginning at 1500 GMT (1000 CDT) and ending at
0300 GMT (2200 CDT).

Texas HIPLEX operational day: A day during which clouds are seedl~d and/or
sampled by aircraft in the Texas HIPLEX target area; these days mayor
may not coincide with mesoscale operational days.

Operational period: From 1600 GMT (1100 CDT) until dark seven days per
week for aircraft operations; 1500 GMT (1000 CDT) to 0300 GMT (2200 CDT)
for collecting radar data; and 1130 GMT (0630 CDT) to 0300 GMT
(2200 CDT) for ground activities such as forecasting and makin9 special
rawinsonde soundings.

Target area: Area within which cloud seeding by aircraft may be conducted.

Mesoscale area: Area within which mesoscale meteorological data are
obtained.

Natural cloud: A cloud that is not seeded by aircraft in the Texas
HIPLEX area, but may be sampled by aircraft.

..

Semi-isolated convective complex: A complex of convective elemen'ts
usually distinct and separable from other complexes by distancl~s
ranging from one to several diaml~ters.

;;

Line of semi-isolated convective complexes: Three or more semi-
isolated convective complexes as defined above occurring along
a line.

Calibration seeding: Seeding and sampling clouds for the purpose of
achieving a better understanding of the physical processes within
clouds and the influence of artificial nuclei on the microphysics
and rnicrodynamics of convective clouds, and not for the purpos,e of
producing a large effect at the ground such as additional precipitation.

"

;;;

'vii
