The FIT A (Federal Technology Trans-
fer Act) of 1986 promotes the
commercialization of federal laboratory
technology through two approaches -
licensing patented inventions to private

3

tially reduce the cost of oxidation of
fonnaldehyde for disposal purposes. The
process consists of a catalyzed advanced
oxidation reaction utilizing hypochlorous
acid.

From Laboratory
to Marketplace

TERRI CASIAS
Research Program Coordinator

business for commercial sale and partici-
pating in Cooperative Research and
Development Agreements with private
companies and other non-Federal entities.
In fiscal year 1993, the Bureau of Recla-
mation patented several inventions and
initiated several Cooperative Research and
Development Agreements with non-
Federal entities.
We were pleased to present issued pat-
ents, with accompanying cash awards, as
follows:

. Chemical Process for Removing
Selenium From Water (Patent
No. 5,089,141) - by Andrew P. Murphy
- This is a water treatment process used
primarily for the removal of organo
selenium compounds from water sup-
plies. This process is based on using two
different metal powders and is shown
effective for the removal of both the
inorganic and organic fonns of selenium.
. Fish Egg and Larvae Collection System
(Patent No. 5,181,479) - by Steve D.
Hiebert - A system that continuously col-
lects and preserves fish eggs and larvae
(along with small aquatic animals and
biota) by fIltration of known volumes
of water.
. Chemical Process for the Catalytic Oxi-
dation of Fonnaldehyde and Other
Organic Compounds (patent No.
5,244,581) - by Andrew P. Murphy - A
process has been developed to substan-

Major interest in CRDA (Cooperative
Research and Development Agreements)
continues. New CRDA's were signed with:

. Radian Corporation - An agreement to
evaluate the effectiveness of an ad-
vanced oxidation process for increasing
rates of oxidation of various organic
contaminants.
. Water Save, Inc. - An agreement to test
the behavior of a proposed evaporation
reduction fonnulation.
. Colorado Department of Agriculture,
Division of Plant Industry, Biological
Pest Control Section - An agreement to
determine if insects can successfully
overwinter and reproduce in Colorado,
and if they can successfully control pur-
ple loosestrife in Colorado.
. Pacific Gas and Electric Company - An
existing master CRDA provided for per~
fonning the following new studies:

- Erosion prediction under dam founda-
tions.
- Literature search on embankment dam
breaching.
- Testing of rip-rap for overtopping pro-
tection for embankment dams. . . .
