THE LARAMIE RIVER PROBLEM

A. A decision of the Supreme Court of the United states awards

to Colorado 39750 acre feet diversion rights in the Laramie River.

It is agreed between the Meada<<landers in the valley and the Transmountain

Diversionists ~onvey by tunnel and ditch to the Poudre giving half of

the water to each, or 19875 acre feet to the Meadowlanders and the same

amount to the Transmountain Diversionists.

B. This aTJlount of water gives -the Meadowlanders 4.4 acre feet to

irrigate their haylands, an amount they say is not quite sufficient.

The consumptive use of water is probably about .71 acre feet per acre.

About 84% of the water diverted to the Meadowlands returns to the

river and flows down stream into Wyoming.

C. The Meadowlanders ask the Wyoming irrigators to permit the

Meadowlanders to divert a larger quantity of water inasmuch as this

water - at least 90% of it - would be returned to the ~ver.

Investigation shows that approximately 1/10 of an acre foot per acre

will be consumed, that is after-the'4..4 acre foot is applied.

The Wyoming irrigators around Wheatland say No, that this would

be giving their water to the Colorado Meadowlanders without securing

any benefits in return.

The Meadowlanders have threatened in the past, and do at the

present time,to sell their water rights or portions of them to the

Transmountain Diversionists. The water derived from these rights

would be taken out of the basin and hence there would be no return

to the Wyoming irrigators.
