.

The California Department of Water Resources withdrew as a financial
partner in the project on August 1, 1975. In a letter to the
Bureau, the state agency said:

,.

"Our Department has been reviewing its priorities over
the last two months. As a result, we have reached the
conclusion that we cannot put manpower and funds into
the Northern Sierra Nevada Weather Modification Project.
For the present, we will be directing all of our resources
toward reevaluating the allocation of existing water sup-
plies throughout the State and developing and implementing
programs oriented toward more efficient use of water."

~ Since then, the Department has been informed of progress in the
project and has assisted the Bureau by providing information needed
for project development. On September 28, 1977, Ronald B. Robie,
Director of the Department of Water Resources, notified the Bureau
of the Department1s "interest in the continuation of your program to
the end that more dependable evaluations of the potential of weathler
modification may be achieved on a firm scientific basis." The
department pledged continued cooperation in exchange of data and
other information relating to weather modification activity in the
state.

.

1-5
