.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

.

As part of its obligation under a series of cooperative agreements

with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration the Division of

Water Resources of the State of Utah Department of Natural Resources has

.

undertaken an evaluation of the Utah operational weather modification

program. The evaluation has involved field investigations and analysis.

z yvrJ~

.

The field investigations were conducted from 15 January to 15 March
in -th:'-~~cinity of the Tushar M~!l"r-t:iTe--eOwn-O+-:a~

Because of wet conditions no cloud seeding was conducted in this part of

Utah ~n 1985.

A program of basic and applied studies was sti 11

.

conducted, however, in order to increase knowledge of the winter storms

and ~mprove future cloud seeding operations.

Analysis has been

completed of the data collected ~n the~ field investigations.

That

.

analysis is reported here.

The analysis is being completed at three levels.

The first level

consists of the work of various subcontractors to the Utah Division of

.

Water Resources and ~s described in their individual reports to the

Division and in papers for scientific conferences. The second level of

analysis is the subject of the present report. It draws together and

.

integrates the results of the subcontractors and of the present author

into a comprehensive treatment of the key scientific questions. The

third level of analysis yet to be completed will consist of the formal

.

publication ~n the refereed literature of selected results from this

report and from the Levell analysis.

The field investigations were tailored to the kinds of clouds being

.

studied. Many of the clouds in the study area over the Tushar Mtns are

.

-xx~-
