XI. SUSPENSION CRITERIA

The following criteria for suspension of cloud treatment* will: be
observed to minimize any actual or perceived adverse effects that
might be associated with the seeding:

1. The site director has the responsibility to suspend tre:atment
operations in any situation in which he believes these oper:ations
may cause or aggravate a serious threat to life, property, :crops,
livestock, wildlife, or ecosystems. The SWR-75 radar will :be used
for real-time detection of potentially severe storms. Treatment
will be suspended on, and for a substantial distance around, any
storm that approaches severe limits as determined from experience
during past field seasons.

2. The site director has the responsibility to suspend treatment
operations, when it could be commonly perceived that this activity
might create or aggravate severe weather situations.

3. The treatment operations will be suspended immediately by the
site director whenever the National Weather Service issues a watch
or warning for severe weather, tornadoes, severe hail, or floods
affecting any part of the operations area.

,,'

"

4. Treatment will be suspended when, in the opinion of local
advisory or state government groups, this activity might be
detrimental to agricultural production, harvesting, certain social
activities, or otherwise be considered seriously objectionable.

* For the randomized seeding experiment, the term "treatment" refers
either to the release from the seeding aircraft of seeding material
or to the use of a placebo mechanism on the treatment pass through
the cloud. For other experiments, it refers only to the rele~se of
seeding material.

I,.

34
