a. What are the inte!lractions between microphysical and dynamical
processes in larger clouds?

b. How does cell propagation occur in multicell storms?

c. What is the concruntration of ice in multicell storms, and
where does it come from?

d. Are there signifkant correlations between precipitation
amounts in multicell storms and measurable characteristics of
the storms and their environment (multiple response variables)?

Appendix F discusses some of the roles that physical investigations
will play both in the randomized experiment and in the continuing
evolution of HIPLEX. Til,e Weather Modification Advisory Board
(1978) points out the tE~ndency of randomized experiments to
downgrade the physical investigations as the program progresses in
order to favor the stat'istical experiment. The strong emphasis on
physical studies within HIPLEX-1 insures that this will not be
true in this experiment. Both physical and statistical studies
are important and compll~mentary.

33
