1. The fraction of columnar (warm-habit) crystals 5 minutes : after
treatment (FCC5)* determined from a decelerator slide exposed
within a 2-km distance that is centered on the second pointeri.

I
2. The maximum area of the 20-dBl echo (M2EA) and the 30-dB4 echo
(M3EA).

3. The time duration of the 20-dBl echo (D2EC) and the 30-dBl
echo (D3EC).

4. The maximum radar reflectivity factor (MAXl).

5. The maximum mean. volume diameter of the hydrometeors at ~he
+10 oC level (MVDP).

6. The time to initial precipitation at cloud base (TIPB) ai
indicated by the first appearance of a 15-dBl echo in the radar
beam tilt at or closest to the cloud base.

~

Table 6 summarizes the primary response variables, secondary response
variables, final test statistics, and their methods of measurement.

L. Procedures for Determining Radar Response Variables

The selection of the first echo, and the subsequent definition of the
radar echo volume with time, will require some intervention by a
skilled analyst. Aircraft "skin paints" should not be interpreted as
first echoes. Neither should nearby echoes be considered as part of
the treated cloud echo. The analyst obviously must not have knowledge
of whether the cloud was actually seeded or not when making these
judgments.

No. of columns
No. of columns + No. of other crystals' if the denominator f 0

* FCC5 =

or

Median of all (seeded + unseeded)
values of FCC5 for all cases where
some crystals were present,

if the denominator = 0

24
