.

WATER REQUIREMENTS

Forseeable new water requirements in the Colorado River Basin in
Colorado are mainly those associated with the development of fuel from
oil shale and the associated urban grm~th. The water required for
these purposes varies between wide limits. For example, in the
October 1979 report liThe Availability of Water For Oil Shale And Coal
Gasification Development In The Upper Colorado River Basin" by the
Colorado Department of Natural Resources, the water requirements for
a one million barrel per day oil shale plant ranges fr~~ 40,000 to
180,000 acre-feet per year, and the associated urban water is estimated
to be 15-20 percent of the plant water requirements.
It is apparent from the above values that the water needed for
oil shale development depends upon the method used to extract the oil.
Consequently, we have made the water supply studies for given water
requirements, these being for 100,000, 200,000 and 350,000 acre-feet
per year.

.

-7-
