Hurley
Page 2
March 7, 1984

The major problem in incorporating band seeding in the
Moroccan pro:ject design is the lack of information on the frequency
and intensity of convective bands in that area. One suggestion
for a quick look at the presence of bands would be to immediately
ship six or eight recording raingages to be installed along
the coastal plain from Rabat to Casablanca and possibly some
on the plateau north of the Atlas Mountains. If we could only
get two months data from mid March to mid May we might be able
to get some clues as to the band climatology. This would be
of significant value in designing a program for next winter.
Our experience in Santa Barbara showed it was quite easy to
detect bands from recording raingage records based on rainfall
intensity and continuity of movement through the network.

This effort would be quite inexpensive and could be started
immediately. I assume the Bureau would have recording ra ing ag es
available. If not, we have eight or nine recording gages that
could be made available and shipped within a week by air freight
to Morocco.

Let me know if we can be of assistance.

Sincel~.elY'
L-. ~ ..
.-//

Keith J.
