..

The following sections outline the central aspects of
the proposed plan for a demonstration project. The
environmental studies and development of suspension
criteria for minimizing possible ecological stress or
social hazards during heavy snow periods are discussed
in Part V.

~

l. Areas. - The demonstration project would conduct
seeding in four or five separate subtarget areas
throughout the Upper Basin. The total target area
proposed would be about 6,000 to 7,000 square miles.
A typical subtarget area would be some l,500 square
miles or about the size of the current pilot project
target area (1,300 square miles).

.

subtarget areas would essentially be located within
the eight primary target areas. Location and selection
of the subtarget areas will be a main aspect of the
planning and will involve major coordination with
local and state groups, environmental interests,
concerned citizens, and other Federal agencies.
Local opinions and attitudes have been an
impor}ant aspect in determining sites for weather
modification research.

~

19
