Also, it was noted earlier that there were no <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />observations (other than daily precipitation) made between Camp Hale and <br /> <br />the ridge top where the strongest orographic lifting takes place. Thus, <br /> <br />unobserved snow may be falling downwind of Camp Hale. Still, with these <br /> <br />qualifications, good qualitative agreement is obtained between the ob- <br /> <br />served snowfall and the computed snowfall of Figure l3b. <br /> <br />To obtain the average precipitation (or condensation) per unit area <br /> <br />the values presented in Figure 13 must be divided by the length of in- <br /> <br />terval involved. The assumption has been made that all condensation, <br /> <br />thus the precipitation, due to orographic lifting takes place between <br /> <br />Minturn and the ridge top. This distance is about 4 x 106 cm (40 km.). <br /> <br />The result of dividing the precipitation values is presented in Table I. <br /> <br />Negative precipitation implies no prec:ipitation. The total condensation <br /> <br />per unit area is shown. Comparison of these results with the ground mea- <br /> <br />surements (Figure 10) is very difficult to make for this set of data. <br /> <br />The snow was light and the data taken between ten and fifteen hours after <br /> <br />the orographic snow.
