Cloud seeding

The Alberta Research Council con-
ducts routine cloud seeding opera-
tions in the southern half ollhe
central Alberta experimental region.
Researchers use lour aircraft
leased trom an Alberta firm to seed
all potential hailstorms during the
operations period of June 20 to
August 31. Each aircraft is equipped
with a rack lor ejecting 400 'pencil'
lIares, containing the artificial ice
nucleating particles, into Ihe clouds
from above. II also has either two
acelone burners or two wing-
mounted racks with 32 large flares
lor cloud base seeding.

One cloud seeding method being
tested is the '8/saSB, at the base 01
clouds. of silver iodide ice nucleating
particles from flares attached to air.
craft wings.

I
I

( \
~'

.

,

~----
L ;-'-

-
-

~

:

"

Cloud seeding for hail suppression
10k _500

,,""

Cloud seeding is
done either at the
base of clouds so
that updrafts, in-
dicated by the large
arrows, carry the
seeding particles into
the clouds. or from
above clouds. where
silver iodide flares
are dropped into the
clouds towers.

-30"

_200

'00

~'ngC.U"IIIlO"
Main tIu,.,.,.I..,nl,lt,o""l
Upclr.tt . $om. mel1la ,.,n
