.

A second briefing will occur in the evening at 2100 MST at Field

Headquarters. It will cover the same items as the morning briefing.

Its purpose is to assure a continuous high level of attention to current

and impending weather, to ascertain changes in equipment availability,

to consider changes in logistics and other matters, and to allow

informed decisions to be m.ade on the possibility of nighttime research
operations.
An important goal of the field program is to collect a maximum
amount of information about the study clouds and their environment. To
reach this goal careful scheduling of personnel will be required.
Personnel should thus be prepared to assume a flexible work schedule.
Unusual working hours may be required to meet the times of important
weather, and long hours may be required to fully sample a STORM. For
example, a STORM may commence at 0200 MST and last for 18-24 hr or
longer. Relief shifts and substitution of cross-trained personnel may
be recommended to meet gaps in normal personnel allocation that occur
during long operations. It is recognized, however, that operations may
at times be limited by fatigue and that rest is required in order not to

compromise safety and data quality.

c. Personnel requirements. Table 2 lists the personnel require-
ments for research support and for operation of the various instrumen-
tation. With the two radars it is permissible to use cross-trained per-
sonnel from other organizations. It should be possible therefore to
operate these two radars conti nuously throughout most STORMS. The
requirement of no operator for the radiometer in the zenith mode means
that instrument may collect data between STORMS while unattended.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

-20-

.
