.

Tushar Mtns research arecl lying in both groups--those meeting the
seeding criteria and those not meeting the seeding criteria. This is a
key feature of the program" Data will therefore be collected at every
feasible opportunity.
The 1985 field research program will be dealing with clouds which
are nominally not-seeded. Figure 2 shows that most of the generators of
the operational project are located 100 km or more from the Tushar Mtns.
All the generators are positioned to seed clouds in Washington County
and are not operated under other conditions. For example, generators
21-1, 21-8, and 21-9 are operated only with northerly winds that would
transport seeding material to the south. No seeding of clouds in the
research area would thus be expected under reasonable meteorological
conditions.
In view of the simultaneous conduct of the research program and
operational project two periods of time will be defined: the STORM and
the Potential Seeding Period. A STORM will determine and coincide with
a period of research. It will occur whenever there is significant cloud
cover in the Tushar Mtns re~search area. Significant cloud cover means

any cloud with a non-zero probability of producing precipitation on the

Tushar Mtns. As a minimum this means a broken to overcast mid-level

(altocumulus or altostratus) or lower-level (stratus) cloud deck. A

STORM is similar to the Pot,ential Storm Conditions used by Super and

Heimbach (1983) in the Brid!ger Range Experiment. A Potential Seeding

Period, on the other hand, will coincide with the time period when the

operational project seeding criteria are met in the research area

regardless whether seeding i:s conducted there. In 1985 there will be no

seeding, but in 1983 there was randomized seeding of Potential Seeding

.

.

.

..

.

.

.

.

.

-12-

.
